Fixed-time psychodynamic psychotherapy, also known as brief or time-limited psychodynamic therapy, is a specific type of psychodynamic therapy that is structured with a predetermined number of sessions. The therapy focuses on a specific issue or problem and aims for a targeted outcome within a set timeframe, typically much shorter than long-term psychodynamic therapy. 
Key features of fixed-time psychodynamic psychotherapy:

    A specific number of sessions is agreed upon at the outset, often between 6-12 sessions, but always subject to agreement.
     
  • Focused approach:
    The therapy targets a range of specific areas or issues related to what the client is experiencing. We identify the root issues in the first session.

    A clear understanding of the goals for therapy is established in collaboration between the client and therapist. 
     
  • Emphasis on the therapeutic relationship:
    The relationship between the client and therapist is crucial, especially given the limited time, and rapport tends to build quickly.

    Brief psychodynamic psychotherapy is an evidence-based intervention, meaning it has been shown to be effective in treating maladaptive or repetitive behaviours within a limited timeframe.

    The therapist adapts the approach and overcomes challenges within the limited time frame. This is achieved through the critically important first session in which autobiographical memory is developed.
